The start of a new year offers a meaningful moment for individuals in recovery to reflect on their progress, set new goals and strengthen the support systems that sustain long-term wellness. The South Carolina Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities’ Office of Substance Use Services (OSUS) is encouraging individuals, families and communities to approach 2026 as a fresh start grounded in connection, encouragement and continued growth.
“Recovery is built one day at a time,” said Dan Loffredo, Recovery Services Coordinator for OSUS. “The new year is not about perfection. It is about setting realistic goals, celebrating progress and knowing that support is always available.”
For many people, January represents a time to pause and look ahead. In recovery, that may mean recommitting to daily routines, reconnecting with peers or adjusting goals to better reflect personal needs and circumstances. OSUS emphasizes that even small steps, such as attending a meeting, reaching out to a sponsor or prioritizing self-care, can help build confidence and momentum.
Families and communities also play a vital role in recovery. The new year offers an opportunity for loved ones to renew their commitment to compassion, understanding and stigma-free support. Open conversations, patience and encouragement can help individuals in recovery feel supported as they work toward their goals. “Recovery is not a journey anyone has to take alone,” Loffredo said. “As we move into a new year, we want people to know that support, community and hope are always within reach.”
