Job Description:
Provides non-clinical services intended to aid patients in establishing recovery from high risk or dependent alcohol and other drug use problems.  Works as part of a hospital emergency department team to provide peer support and motivation to encourage patients who are seeking treatment for alcohol or other drug dependency and addiction issues.  Assists in completing referrals to treatment services and developing service plans to promote successful linkage to treatment services.  Services will be provided in the hospital.

Job Responsibilities:
Works as the SBIRT Peer Recovery Support Specialist at Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital, full time, on the day shift. Schedule may vary as emergency department (ED) needs evolve and change.
Conducts brief interventions with patients who screen positive for alcohol and/or other drug use.
Identifies patient's history of drug/alcohol use, treatment history, motivation to change behavior, and other needs for community support services.
Identifies patient's readiness to change and use motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support a plan for reducing or eliminating harmful alcohol and/or other drug use.
Works with ED staff and social workers to identify community support services.
Assists patients and family with understanding how to utilize these community services.
Assists patients in linking to community support services and substance use disorder treatment services, including securing appointments and transportation.
Acts as peer support throughout the hospitalization and post-discharge, as appropriate, to facilitate attainment of goals.
Provides family members with recovery support materials.
Provides telephone outreach to patients to assist with linkages and continued peer support as an ACE coach as needed.
Models coping techniques and self-help strategies.
Participates in trainings to continually gain new skills.
Attends required staff and other meetings.
Completes required documentation and other reports.
Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support.
Consults with nursing staff and social work as requested, even if patient does not screen positive.
Notifies patient's nurse before visiting the patient.
Telephones treatment providers to verify patient showed up for appointment; and follow-up by telephone with any patient who misses an appointment.
When in doubt, consults SBIRT supervisor with questions or concerns.

Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
Must be actively engaged in his/her own recovery program with at least two years of demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or other drug use.
Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS).
Upon hire, approval and credentialing by Prisma Health.
Compassion for persons actively struggling with a substance use disorder.
Good interpersonal skills.
Ability to work well with patients, healthcare professionals, and partner agencies.
Ability to work independently,
Great time management skills and the ability to prioritize effectively.
Listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
Creative problem-solving skills.
Strong computer skills and the ability to provide patient documentation in the healthcare software system. 
Teachability and trainability.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in the addiction or healthcare field.
